Academies on the South Coast

An Academy is a new type of secondary school, designed to meet the needs of  young people in the 21st century.  Academies are aimed at raising the academic  achievements of all students to a level that will  rival those of the best schools. Academies are independently governed, statefunded schools providing free education to all students. They are given a number of freedoms  to innovate in ways that will benefit each young person. For example, they seek to provide a  teaching and learning environment that is in line  with the best in the maintained sector and offer a broad and balanced curriculum to students of all abilities, focusing on one or more subject specialism.

Academies, once up and running, receive equivalent funding to other secondary schools in the County. Academies, like secondary schools, continue to be subject to regular inspections by Ofsted and have a duty to ensure that students are supported in achieving the five ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes (www.everychildmatters.gov.uk) and to promote community cohesion.
