Academies on the South Coast

Acadmies
An Academy is a new type of secondary school, designed to meet the needs of young people in the 21st century. Academies are aimed at raising the academic achievements of all students to a level that will rival those of the best schools. Academies are independently governed, statefunded schools providing free education to all students.

They are given a number of freedoms to innovate in ways that will benefit each young person. For example, they seek to provide a teaching and learning environment that is in line with the best in the maintained sector and offer a broad and balanced curriculum to students of all abilities, focusing on one or more subject specialism.

You can read more about the background and development of Academies and details of useful sites by visiting our All about Academies area.

There are over 80 Academies open throughout the UK with many more opening soon or being planned. You can find information about the proposed Academy for Lancing, Sompting and the surrounding area and Academy for Littlehampton here. There are further Academies planned in Midhurst and Shoreham-by-sea. More information will be provided about these in the near future.
