Taster Courses

Are you interested in teaching as a career
but want to find out more?

TEACHING TASTER COURSES are aimed at individuals close to making a decision to apply for initial teacher training. The 3 day programme is designed to enable participants to reach a well informed decision about whether teaching is, or is not, a career they wish to pursue. Taster Courses are designed to give those close to making a decision regarding teacher training an insight into teaching as a profession.

Taster Courses include basic information regarding pay and conditions, subject specific information, an idea of the role of a teacher and a visit to a school to observe teachers in practice.

Taster Courses are funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and West Sussex will be hosting the following Taster Courses in 2008/09

November 2008 - Black and Minority Ethnic Groups into Primary Teaching
Teachers from Black and Minority Ethnic groups are currently under represented at all levels of teaching. This taster course is designed specifically for members of Black and Minority Ethnic groups thinking of a career in teaching at Primary level.

February 2009 - Secondary Priority Subjects
This course is designed  for graduates interested in Secondary teacher training in Maths, Science, Religious Education, Design & Technology (graphics, resistant materials, food technology and textiles), Modern Foreign Languages, ICT and Music.  If you are interested in teaching Maths or Science but do not have a relevant degree there are still routes open to you, provided you have an ‘A’ level or equivalent qualification in science or maths or substantial experience in a related field. If you have any questions regarding the relevancy of your degree to the subject you want to teach, please do call and ask us. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone wishing to teach Science.

If you would be interested in taking part in our courses, please contact the School Workforce Development Officer on 01243 642351 for further information.

There are a number or routes into teaching, including an employment based training scheme known as the Graduate Teacher Programme.  You can access information on this via the link at the bottom of the page.
