West Dean/CYPS Learning Partnership Course in Art & Design
This course was planned and co-ordinated by Jane Sedgewick (CYPS Learning) and Caroline Pearce-Higgins, Head of Continuing Education at West Dean, with guidance and support from the College's Principal, Robert Pulley.
The extended course offered West Sussex primary teachers a rich and stimulating environment in which to develop confidence in investigating and making in art & design,to learn a variety of new techniques and to reflect on the process of learning through making. Central to this was the use of a sketchbook to explore and develop ideas based on the environment and to reflect on and analyse work. The course consisted of a balance of practical workshops and tutor led discussion seminars. The exhibition at the end of the course, shared and celebrated the work by the teachers.
During the course, practical workshops in drawing and painting, sculptural ceramics, felt-making and mosaics took place. Seminar sessions focused on sketchbooks and the school context, sketchbooks: supporting the learning process, creative approaches to sketchbook presentation and visual literacy and thinking skills.
