Citizenship

Image of dustbin with world in representing citizenship

Citizenship is about helping pupils to become informed and responsible citizens with the knowledge and skills to play an effective role in society.

Knowledge of Citizenship has to be developed and exercised thorough enquiry and communication, and participation in the school community. Citizenship is statutory at Key Stages 3 and 4.

The things you will learn in Citizenship help you to:

  • become informed;
  • express your views;
  • find out how your community is organised and what you can do to influence how it works;
  • recognise there are different communities at local, regional, national and international levels; and
  • appreciate the importance of looking after the environment.

The links below will take you to various aspects of citizenship in schools.
