Units of Work Year 6 Term 2

A group of Year Six teachers from across the county have been working together to produce two extended units of work for the Spring term. These are a detailed sequence of lessons and groups of lessons that lead to clearly definable outcomes.

They have been designed to promote:

  • cross-curricular learning;
  • the use of high quality texts;
  • the flexible use of the NLS framework objectives;
  • use of drama and talk.

Included with the planning are units of work designed to support pupils in booster groups and those pupils working beyond age related expectations. The work also includes suggestions for guided reading.

The units of work are based on Science Fiction and Persuasive writing. (The reason for choosing these two focuses was not that we had any inside information about the content of the QCA tests in 2003.) They do however provide opportunities to teach skills that are generic to fiction and non- fiction texts. Indeed, we recommend that teachers focus on a smaller range of outcomes rather than trying to cover every possible text type in the revision term.

Please feel free to use and adapt the materials to suit your own context. We would however be grateful for any feedback that you may have.

All of the planning documentation is included with this guidance. Many of the resources too can be viewed at our resource centre at SAPC.

Colleagues requiring further advice, please email Julian Rose.
