Education Welfare Service (EWS)

Education Welfare is a specialist service provided by the Local Authority to families and schools. Its key role is to ensure high levels of pupil attendance. Approaches include individual pupil casework, wider support to schools for them to promote good attendance and take quick action to address potential absence difficulties, and working with other agencies and groups to address factors that contribute to absence from school. In addition Education Welfare undertakes to protect children from exploitation and harm (including educationally) in the areas of child employment and entertainment and child protection.

Education Welfare has teams of Education Welfare Officers based within the Integrated Service Delivery Areas. There is also an Attendance team (provisionally until end of March 2008). In addition there is a specialist Education Welfare Officer responsible for child employment and children in entertainment and a Children Missing from Education team.
