Safer Routes to Schools is one of the main initiatives outlined in the Councils School Travel Strategy, a part of the Local Transport plan, which aims to increase the numbers of pupils walking, cycling and taking the bus to school.
The principal aim of the 'Safer Routes to School' project is to highlight travel and safety problems on walking and cycling routes to school in conjunction with local schools and to develop schemes such as new cycle routes, footpaths, and pedestrian crossing points to help overcome these problems.
The main element of any Safer Routes to School scheme is the development of a School Travel Plan (STP). STP's aim to address the increase in car use for the school journey by encouraging pupils to choose sustainable transport as walking, cycling, travelling by bus/train or by being part of a car share scheme. STP 's contain details on how children travel and should include a variety of initiatives to encourage sustainable travel for the benefit of the children, the school and the school community.
Schemes are often complimented by Road Safety Education and Training, and Travelwise® initiatives.
