Health & Safety

Health and Safety
The guidance in these pages is for heads, governors and managers with line management responsibilities in West Sussex Local Authority (LA) educational establishments. Educational establishments include schools, colleges, special support units, pupil referral units, adult learning centres, youth centres, youth wings and activity centres.

Heads of educational establishments have delegated responsibility for establishing local health and safety management arrangements that conform to their employer's health and safety policy and Governing bodies should monitor the effectiveness of these arrangements. These pages give practical guidance about what heads, governors and managers with line management responsibilities should know and do to ensure that their establishment is being run in a safe way without undue risks to health or safety.

The generic term ‘head’ is used to mean the senior workplace manager - usually this will be the head teacher or principal, but not in all establishments. For example, it could be the teacher-in-charge in some special support facilities, or the youth worker in youth service establishments. Similarly, the generic terms child and children are used to mean the principal service users at educational establishments.
