Environmental issues are increasingly on the agenda these days, and as a result many demands are made upon organisations to become 'green' and to be environmentally aware in the ways they conduct their travel activities. Increasing congestion, pollution and perceived danger of accidents are just some of the issues we face. No single action can, in itself, solve the problems we face, however, taken together, lots of individual activities can have a worthwhile effect.
The purpose of TravelWise is to:
- increase AWARENESS of the problems arising from motor traffic;
- encourage ACCEPTANCE that there is a pressing need to change the situation and that the problems can be tackled by all of us;
- achieve a more responsible ATTITUDE to the use of the car;
- promote alternatives and encourage drivers to take ACTION to reduce their car journeys or switch to other modes such as walking, cycling, bus, train or car sharing.
TravelWise seeks to raise awareness of the role individuals, businesses and schools can play in helping to reduce pollution and congestion caused by cars. In West Sussex, 77% of air pollution is produced by motor vehicles. TravelWise in West Sussex aims to make other modes of transport, such as cycling, walking and use of public transport a real alternative to the car. At the heart of TravelWise is the belief that individuals can make a difference so that everyone can be part of the solution, not the problem.
