School Funding

The Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) is the major source of funding for school budgets. DSG funding is allocated to individual schools through the West Sussex formula. The formula distributes funding on the basis of factors such as pupil age related staffing, additional and special needs and premises etc.

Schools also receive funding for various purposes through the following grants:

  • Devolved Formula Capital Grant (DFCG)
  • Standards Fund (SF)
  • School Standards Grant (SSG)
  • School Standards Grant   (Personalisation) (SSG(P))

Schools may also raise extra funds through voluntary contributions from parents for some activities and through letting the school premises.

The West Sussex Scheme for Financing Schools sets out the financial relationship between the Local Authority and maintained schools. Governing bodies may spend their delegated budget for the purposes of their school. They must produce an annual budget plan, ensure that accurate accounts are kept and that income and expenditure returns conform to the Consistent Financial Reporting framework.
