Higher Level Teaching Assistants

Higher Level Teaching Assistants are now an integral part of the school workforce. West Sussex have approx 370 Teaching Assistants registered with the Training and Development Agency (TDA) having either gained the status or working towards it.

  • TDA funding has been available since 2005 and is still available up to April 2009. Decisions about funding are made annually.
  • New HLTA standards were approved in November 2007 and are available to view at http://www.tda.gov.uk/support/hlta/professstandards.aspx
  • Schools are either using the HLTA status as recognition and CPD for their Teaching Assistants, with the potential for future development, or have a specific role for their HLTA.
  •  In West Sussex there are a range of training programmes that are fully funded with a bursary, including Secondary Specialist Maths and Science HLTA training.
