In 2007 the Government confirmed a 14 year strategic capital investment programme for primary schools. £1.9 billion
has been made available for the 2008-11 period and each local authority will receive an allocation. In West Sussex this
is expected to be £5.406m in 2009/10, £7.784m in 2010/11 and some £6.5m thereafter. The programme
will specifically require the rebuilding, remodelling or refurbishing of at least half of all primary schools, including rebuilding
or taking out of use at least 5% of school buildings in the worst condition. To ensure West Sussex benefits from this
investment the County Council is responsible for preparing, getting DCSF approval and then maintaining the Primary Strategy
for Change.
