School Meals - Encouraging healthy eating

Apple

West Sussex County Council has prioritised healthy eating in the contents of the award winning packed lunch and continues to meet all statutory requirements for school meals. No GM foods are used in meals served in West Sussex schools.

Healthy eating is supported by work with pupils, parents, schools and the Health Service covering all aspects of food and being healthy. Activities include:

  • a new school milk programme providing free milk to eligible pupils as well as a paid service for other pupils. 69% of schools are taking part in the scheme.
  • working with the Health Service on Fruit in Schools which provides free fruit each day for children aged 4 to 6. 98% of schools are taking part.

We await further details of recent Government announcements on school meals. It seems unlikely that West Sussex will benefit significantly from this initiative since expenditure on ingredients already exceeds 50 pence per meal.
